Veterans of Lakeview: Stories of Service - Cemetery Walking Tour
The rows of headstones inside Lakeview Cemetery hold the stories of generations of Harbor Springs residents—including many men and women who served their country in times of war and peace.
Join curator Beth Wemigwase for a special walking tour exploring the lives of local veterans laid to rest at Lakeview Cemetery. Through historical research, gravestones, military records, newspaper accounts and other historic sources, she will share the stories behind the names and dates carved in stone.
During this guided 90-minute tour, we’ll visit the graves of around ten local veterans, including members of Company K who served during the Civil War and Stanley Hoover, one of two men who lost their lives during WWI and for whom our local chapter of the American Legion is named. At each stop, we’ll explore not only their military service, but who they were before and after their time in uniform, their connections to Harbor Springs, and how they were remembered by their families and community.
Along the way, we’ll also take a closer look at military gravestones and memorials and the symbols, inscriptions and markers that tell us more about a veteran’s service.
