Headstone Cleaning and Preservation Workshop
Ever wondered how to safely clean an old headstone or how to learn more about the stories behind the names?
Join curator Beth Wemigwase for a fun, hands-on workshop at Lakeview Cemetery in Harbor Springs where you’ll learn the basics of caring for historic gravestones and exploring the history they hold. This workshop is guided by widely accepted preservation standards and techniques used by professionals. We’ll walk through what’s safe, what to avoid, and why it matters—then you’ll have the chance to try it yourself.
After an introduction and demonstration, participants will roll up their sleeves and help gently clean select headstones. Participants have the option to purchase a headstone cleaning “starter kit” to take home and/or use during the workshop. The kit includes an 8 oz spray bottle of Endurance Gravestone cleanser, a brush and a plastic scrapper. To get the kit, choose the "Register (with Take Home Kit)" option when you sign up for the workshop.
The workshop will also cover simple ways to research the people behind the stones, including online tools and local resources that can help you uncover their stories. This is a relaxed, small-group experience, perfect for anyone curious about local history, genealogy, or preservation.
Space is limited—advanced registration required. The workshop may involve being in the sun for several hours and includes a lot of standing and crouching.
