Operation Taconite

Join us via Zoom for our next Virtual Harbor History Talk on Thursday, Jan. 21 at 7:00 pm. Mr. Mark Gill will be the speaker. Gill is the Director of Vessel Traffic Service for the Coast Guard at Sault Ste Marie and manages Operation Taconite, the largest domestic icebreaking operation in the United States. He will present on the who, what, when, where, why and how of Great Lakes icebreaking.

Managed out of Sault Ste Marie, each year Operation Taconite officials dispatch eight US and Canadian icebreakers to meet the transportation needs of eight island communities and hundreds of Great Lakes shippers who must traverse the ice choked waterways of southern Lake Michigan, Green Bay, the Straits of Mackinac, the St Marys River, Georgian Bay and western Lake Superior to deliver their cargoes.
