Off Color: The Purple Gang
Thursday, Jul 28, 2022
7:00pm – 8:15pm
In conjunction with the Historical Society’s newest exhibit, “Dry Harbor: Prohibition, Gambling and Gangsters in Harbor Springs,” we are thrilled to welcome author Daniel Waugh for a colorful lecture about Detroit’s notorious Purple Gang. Waugh’s talk chronicles how a group of juvenile delinquents rose from robbing street peddlers to become one of the most notorious bootlegging mobs in history. Not limiting themselves to the booze business, the Purples were violent jacks-of-all-crimes who dabbled in kidnapping, extortion, arson, labor racketeering, narcotics and murder-for-hire.
Waugh’s lecture takes place via Zoom on Thursday, July 28 at 7:00 pm. A zoom link will be emailed to participants a day before the presentation. Reservations are required and tickets are $10 per person.
