Company K – Odawa in the Civil War
Thursday, Aug 12, 2021
5:30pm – 7:00pm
More than 150 years ago, indigenous soldiers bravely served in the American Civil War, including a local group of men who were part of Company K, First Michigan Sharpshooters. Company K was unique because it was the only company in Michigan whose entire roster was filled by Native Americans.
The Historical Society is pleased to welcome author Quita Shier to present a book written on this unique company. In Warriors in Mr. Lincoln’s Army, Shier draws from service records, medical files, biographical and family data extracted from pension files, and personal interviews with soldiers’ descendants, to offer a comprehensive profile on each officer and enlisted Anishnaabe soldier in Company K. During her lecture, Shier will highlight soldiers from the Harbor Springs area.
Tickets are $10 per person. Advanced registration is strongly encouraged as our talks often sell out. Register using the button below or call 231-526-9771. The lecture will take place on the second floor of the Harbor Springs History Museum and coffee and cookies will be served.
