Harbor History Talk - Mackinac Straits Raptor Watch

Thursday, April 16, 2015 05:30pm - 07:00pm

Visiting the lakeshore near Mackinaw City during the past months’ icy weather might not seem very appealing but it’s exactly where you’d find the dedicated members of the Mackinac Straits Raptor Watch. The Harbor Springs Area Historical Society is pleased to welcome Ed Pike of the Raptor Watch to present at our next Harbor History Talk on Thursday, April 16 about the current state of raptor conservation and study in Northern Michigan as well as the raptor watch group.

Ed Pike is a retired Conservation Officer for the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and has been researching birds since attending Central Michigan University in the early 1970s.  As an independent researcher, Pike conducted some of the first studies on Piping Plovers in Michigan and started research on raptors in the Straits area in the early 1990s. In late 2013 Pike founded the nonprofit Mackinac Straits Raptor Watch to begin a long-term research project documenting raptor migrations through the Mackinac Straits.

Pike’s talk will take place at 5:30 pm in the second floor Anton library of the Harbor Springs History Museum. Cost is $5 for adults and free for current HSAHS members. Not a member? You can sign up at the talk or on our website.

Reservations are greatly appreciated and can be made by calling the Historical Society at (231) 526-9771.
