Harbor History Talk - A Sad Fate: The Passenger Pigeon in Michigan

Thursday, July 17, 2014 05:30pm - 07:00pm

One hundred years ago the passenger pigeon, once the most abundant bird in North America, vanished forever from our skies. This tragic tale is the subject of the Harbor Springs History Museum’s current exhibit marking the centenary of the bird’s extinction. To help tell this story, the Harbor Springs Area Historical Society is pleased to welcome speaker Kyle Bagnall of the Chippewa Nature Center on Thursday, July 17 at 5:30 pm.

Bagnall’s talk “A Sad Fate: The Passenger Pigeon in Michigan” includes records from early explorers, missionaries and traders and uncovers tales of the last “grand nesting” in Petoskey in 1878. His multimedia presentation features historic lithographs, paintings and photographs that follow this tragic story from our past in an effort to help build a sustainable future.

Bagnall received his B.A. in Public History from Western Michigan University in 1993. Since 1995, Kyle has worked at Chippewa Nature Center in Midland, Michigan, where he shares many facets of environmental history with audiences of all ages. Since 2011, Kyle has served as Michigan Coordinator of Project Passenger Pigeon, an international effort dedicated to commemorating the extinction of this amazing species.
