Harbor Springs Historical Society & Museum

History in the Making at the Harbor Springs History Museum

Once a center for local government, a grand old building in the heart of Harbor Springs is quickly becoming a center for local history. Welcome to the Harbor Springs History Museum located in the former city hall building on Main Street. Our museum not only serves as the new home to the Harbor Springs Area Historical Society, it also features exhibits documenting the unique history of this area.

Leading a journey beginning with our first residents, the Odawa Indians, our exhibits escort visitors through time stopping to visit with missionaries, homesteaders, loggers, downtown merchants and resorters. With the arrival of each of these groups, whether by foot, horse, canoe, steam ferry, train or automobile, a connection was made with this place. And with each of these connections, another chapter in our history was written.

Harbor Springs Area Historical Society

The Harbor Springs Area Historical Society (HSAHS) was founded in 1990 by a group of concerned citizens committed to preserving the history of the Harbor Springs area. Soon after its founding, HSAHS achieved 501(c)(3) status as a charitable and educational non-profit organization.

Throughout its history, HSAHS has placed a high priority on protecting our past and maintaining a legacy for future generations. We believe that conserving our history has become even more important as the area continues to experience rapid growth and change.

This commitment continues today as HSAHS welcomes visitors to the new Harbor Springs History Museum. The museum offers not only exhibits and displays celebrating our shared history but also an archives to protect a growing collection of historic photographs and artifacts, a research library, a genealogy center as well as a community space for lectures and programs on Harbor Springs' history. Won't you join us and visit history's home in Harbor Springs!
